Ledger and budgeting now in private beta

Every account, one clear view, one path to independence.

Ember shows you where you stand: every account in one ledger, reconciled against your statements. Next it will map the path to financial independence, so your time is your own.

01

The Ledger

Private beta

Every account you own or owe, in one ledger, with the arithmetic each type requires.

More on editing, search and reconciliation in the ledger.

  • Edit any cell in place. No edit screens.
  • Manage your entries: splits, tags, and transfers.
  • Reconcile against a statement and those rows lock.
  • Command palette, typeahead pickers, undo on everything.
Supported accounts

Checking, savings, credit cards, and cash. Brokerage, including taxable, IRA, Roth, 401(k), HSA, and 529, by balance. Mortgages, student, auto, and personal loans. Joint accounts at the share you own.

Roadmap: holdings and cost basis, real estate, RSUs and equity comp, and shared access for couples.

02

Envelope Budgeting

Private beta

Budget on the day it happens. Know your cash on the day it clears.

Income lands in one pool. You hand it out to categories, and spending draws them down. What is left in an envelope is what you can spend.

  • A charge draws its envelope the day you record it. A check that clears three months later does not move your budget.
  • Ember compares your envelopes against cleared cash and names the shortfall.
  • Card spending draws its envelope and stays owed on the card. There is no payment category to maintain.
  • Ready to assign plus every envelope equals what is in your accounts. The page shows that arithmetic.

03

Investments

Roadmap

A double-entry brokerage ledger, not a balance scraped off a screen.

More on the investment ledger and the net-worth line.

  • Cost basis and unrealized gain, per position
  • Every buy, sell, dividend, split, and reinvestment recorded
  • One net-worth line, every account in it

04

Your Financial Checklist

Roadmap

The checklist is the same every year: is the match captured, the IRA funded before the deadline, the cash earning anything, the savings rate on target. Ember will run it against your ledger.

You can work out the savings rate and the cash cushion today, in Ember's financial independence calculators.

  • Contribution room and deadlines across 401(k), IRA, and HSA
  • Savings rate from what cleared, not what you meant to save
  • Cash earning nothing, and rewards left on the card in your pocket
  • Every account in view, so nothing trivial reaches the list

Why Ember

Built for knowing where you stand, and where you're headed.

The principles underneath it.

Balances stay current

Link accounts at 12,000+ banks and brokerages, read-only. Linking is optional: every plan takes entries by hand and imports the CSV files you download yourself. One dedup pipeline keeps history and live sync from double-counting.

A budget that knows your cash position

Your envelopes say what you can spend. Your cleared balances say whether the cash has arrived. Ember shows both, and the gap between them.

Your ledger, open to your AI

Ember ships a read-only MCP server. Point Claude, or any MCP client, at your finances and ask it questions. Part of Ember Pro.

The bank's word and yours, kept separate

Imported records are immutable. Your reading of them (payee, category, splits) lives alongside. Reconciled rows lock, so history can't quietly drift.

Your data stays yours

Your financial data does one job: showing you your finances. It is never used for advertising, and is not part of any data partnership. Download everything as CSV whenever you like.

Automation where it earns its keep

Recurring transactions on calendar rules, one-click paycheck splits, pre-filled Venmo charges, and a browser extension that writes your Amazon order into the memo.

Plans are $30, $75, and $200 a year. Compare every plan

Serious about security and privacy

Accounts link read-only. Your credentials never touch Ember's servers. Passwords are stored only as a hash. Sign in with a passkey if you prefer. Repeated failed sign-ins are rate-limited. Every record is tied to its owner. Nobody else's query can reach it. Every invite, redemption, and login recorded in an audit log.

Where Ember runs

Ember is built for the desktop web first. The ledger is keyboard-first and assumes a large screen, and it runs in a browser with nothing to install. A phone browser gets a smaller view for reviewing and entering transactions. Apps for iPhone and Android come after that, and no date is set.
